100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan

Lane Library recently received Read Japan’s 2011 donation of 100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan. Sponsored by the Nippon Foundation, 100 English books are selected by a committee of Japanese and foreign scholars, journalists etc. to cover five categories, Politics & International Relations, Economy & Business, Society & Culture, Literature and Arts, and History. This collection will be useful for students and faculty researching Japan for coursework, or just curious about Japanese culture and history.

Interestingly, the Nippon Foundation draws support for its many projects from proceeds of Japanese motorboat racing. The Foundation was established in 1962 to aid the maritime shipping industry, which was devastated by World War II. The scope of the Foundation’s work has expanded widely since then to include educational, social welfare and public health programs, both in Japan and abroad.

GIL-Find Universal Catalog

We are delighted to announce that the University System of Georgia Libraries Universal Catalog of books - also known as the GIL UC Catalog - is now available in the GIL-Find search interface. Just as the Lane Library GIL-Find interface offers enhanced features from the classic GIL catalog, the university system catalog works the same way.

One of the features you can use in GIL-Find when searching for books throughout the university system is faceted searching, which allows you to narrow your search by clicking on format, topic, time period, etc. GIL-Find also allows you to text yourself a citation, add tags, get suggestions of similar items, and more. Our previous announcement when Lane Library added the GIL-Find interface explains some of the additional benefits. The Universal Catalog will work the same way, yet offers you access to books throughout the 35 institutions in the University System of Georgia. You can try out the GIL-Find UC by clicking here, and there is also a link to it on the classic Universal Catalog page that is linked on Lane Library's homepage.

British Newspaper Archive

The British Library recently completed work on digitizing 300 years worth of newspaper archives. This exciting project allows users to search 65 million articles from a range of newspapers in the United Kingdom. This news release provides more information, though it is worth noting that while searching is free there is a subscription fee to download articles as a PDF. All in all, three centuries worth of history now available online is quite impressive!

Why was Gamble Hall named that?

Did AASU’s Gamble Hall get its name from activities such as laying bets? No -- the building (home to the department of Languages, Literature, and Philosophy and numerous classrooms) was named in honor of Savannah Mayor Thomas Gamble (1868-1945). Mayor Gamble, one of the founders of Armstrong, was a journalist and historian as well as a politician. A biography of him written by history student Russell Bazemore in 1988 as a class project is now available via Lane Library’s website as “The Savannah Biographies.”

The Savannah Biographies project was a History Department effort in the 1980's and 1990’s, led by Professor Roger Warlick. Dr. Warlick (1930-1998) encouraged students in his “Historical Methods” courses to do a lot of work with primary, locally available sources, resulting in papers useful to future researchers. Over 400 biographies were created, and all were bound and have been available to researchers visiting the Lane Library’s special collections Minis Room. Now, the librarians are having them digitized and posted on the library’s website.

In Russell Bazemore’s paper about the mayor, readers can find comments made by Mr. Gamble such as the following, made in response to a request for his opinion on the revealing bathing suits women in the early 1930’s had started to wear: “I am not a brave enough man to presume to dictate to the daughters of Eve as to what they should wear on the beach or anywhere else.” We’re glad he was brave enough to make the many civic contributions to Savannah’s life and history, though! Proof that humor is a natural complement to learning: check out this brilliant library guide from the McPherson College Library in Kansas. The Library of the Living Dead uses a graphic novel format to introduce students to the services and resources available at the library. The library even had a Facebook contest where they selected one student to play a zombie in the final scene of the graphic novel. In addition to being fun and innovative, there is some good information in there on how to conduct research.

Savannah Book Festival 2011

This year marks the fourth annual Savannah Book Festival, happening the weekend of February 18-20. Events take place in Savannah's downtown historic district, in and around Telfair Square. The Cake Walk Returns!

After the success of our cake walk for the 2009 Celebrate AASU Day, Lane Library is pleased to announce we are bringing it back. The 2010 Celebrate AASU Day will be held on October 20th on the Student Union lawn. Once again, tickets will be only $3 dollars for the opportunity to win an entire cake.

If you've never heard of a cake walk, it is a splendid good time. Participants walk around a circle of numbers while music is played. When the music stops, a number is drawn and whoever is standing on that number wins a cake! This year's tantalizing selections include red velvet cake, rum cake, strawberry cheesecake, ultimate chocolate cake, and a variety of pies.

Starting at noon, there will be a cake walk every 15 minutes until all of the cakes are gone. Come early so you don't miss out on your favorite! All proceeds from the cake walk will once again be used to purchase books for your Lane Library.

Nobel Prize for Literature Awarded

The 2010 award for the Nobel Prize for Literature was announced this morning. Mario Vargas Llosa was awarded the prize for his "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".

Llosa is considered by many to be the father of modern Peruvian literature and has had a major impact on Latin American literature in the past sixty years. He has crossed genres and written comedies, mysteries, thrillers and historical fiction. Additionally, he's an avid essayist and has been involved in Peruvian politics.

Some of his notable works include:
La Ciudad y los Perros (The Time of the Hero), 1962
La Case Verde (The Green House), 1965/1968
Conversación en la catedral (Conversation in the Cathedral), 1969

Banned Books Week - or, why should we care about censorship?

Each year in the last week of September, libraries across the country draw attention to the issue of censorship by celebrating "Banned Books Week". We celebrate the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.

Why are books challenged? People attempt to ban books from being accessible in libraries for a wide variety of reasons. It is usually because somebody wants to protect readers, often children, from books that they are concerned are too violent or sexual, include profanity, slang, references to drug use or potentially offensive views on racial, religious or other groups, or other reasons.

Why do libraries object to banning books? Libraries operate under a strong ethical purpose to serve as "forums for information and ideas". The American Library Association's (ALA) Library Bill of Rights states that library resources need to be available to ALL people in the community they serve. If we restrict a book based on one person's distaste for it, then we affect another patron's right to access it. Our freedom to read what we want is guaranteed by the First Amendment

If the First Amendment means anything, it means that a state has no business telling a man, sitting alone in his house, what books he may read or what films he may watch.

What books are challenged the most? ALA reports that the top ten books challenged in 2009 were:

SnagFilms is another excellent resource for viewing documentary and educational films. Available on the web, SnagFilms provides over 1,600 documentaries and films free of charge. The films can be searched for specific titles, or you can browse by topic, channel, or an A-Z list. Some of the content on SnagFilms is unique to the site, which makes it a great place to access quality documentaries on a variety of subjects. SnagFilms also provides widgets that allow you to post favorite films online, and if you don't mind the advertising this feature is useful for course websites. The broad topic areas include Arts, Campus, Environment, Health, History, International, Life & Culture, Music, Political, Religion & Spirituality, Science & Nature, Short Form, Sports & Hobby, War, and Women's Issues. GALILEO has just announced the release of an excellent new database, Films On Demand. There are 7,000 video titles in this new online collection and they are a perfect educational tool to use in the classroom or for assignments. Films On Demand covers academic disciplines including humanities and social sciences, business and economics, science and mathematics, and health and medicine, as well as 260 archival newsreels. Films on Demand can be browsed by topic, or you can search for a specific film title. You can also view and search for specific segments of a film for when you want to watch just a portion of a film at a time.

County Health Rankings

Anyone interested in public health data should check out the web site County Health Rankings. This site provides health related statistics and data on every county in the United States. The rankings are determined by health outcomes based on several contributing factors such as individual health behavior, education, jobs, the environment, and health care systems.

For example, you can view the health rankings for the state of Georgia and find out that Chatham County is ranked 61st out of 157 counties. The healthiest county in Georgia, ranked 1st in health outcomes, is Fayette County.

County Health Rankings is one of Lane Library's recommended web sites for the health sciences on our Subject Guides page. Don't forget to check out our subject guides based on your area of study as you conduct your research - it is a great place to make sure your search is as thorough as possible.

So, last week I had a session in the library's classroom with a great bunch - Bill Dawers' Lit class, to be precise.

And, an intrepid student queried me regarding MLA citation style. Specifically, as the citations must now include the "Print" or "Web" designation to indicate where the source came from, the student's question was "well, what if I print out the article?"

Touché!

Long story short: even if you print it out, that does not change the item's provenance. It still came from the web. Printing an article out does not make you a publisher.

Gil-Find Features : Narrowing a Search

Have you tried out the new Gil-Find (beta) catalog yet? If you have, you'll notice that searching in Gil-Find is quite different than in the traditional Gil catalog. Gil-Find allows you to cast your search net wide as you start and then narrow your search using "facets" in the results interface.

Let's try an example of how it can work. Perhaps your professor has asked you to find a source related to Savannah's colonial history. Here's how you could use Gil-Find to locate one.

A keyword search for "Savannah" in all fields brings up 967 results. If I want only works related to the history of Savannah, Georgia, I can limit my search using several of the "facets" in the left-hand column. First, I'll choose the call number F, for General American History.

That narrows my choices to 290 results. Since I'm interested in just Colonial history, I can narrow even further by Era.

You'll notice now that our results are include a much more manageable 26 results. At any point, you can remove an individual facet to broaden the search back up without starting all over again.

Lane Library is pleased to introduce the recent addition of ebrary, a collection of over 10,000 electronic books now available to the AASU community. With ebrary, you are able to read full text books in a variety of scholarly topics right from your computer. There is no need for e-book readers or gadgets, and ebrary is accessible for our users off campus by entering your AASU user name and password. A link to the ebrary collection has been added to the Lane Library homepage, which allows you to search just within the ebrary e-book collection. You will also notice ebrary books in your searching in the library catalog (both the classic and new GILFind interfaces).

There are some excellent functions available when reading books in ebrary, and it offers several premium tools to enhance the e-book experience. There is an option to increase the font size to make it more readable. You can also create an account and then highlight and annotate text. Permanent links can be copied and pasted from the address bar to email, web pages, reserves and so on. The table of contents links to chapters so you can quickly navigate around the text. There is an "Info Tools" button that serves as a dictionary and encyclopedia by allowing users to highlight words and then get a definition or explanation. The "Info Tools" button also links out to online sources related to the text such as maps, web pages, news sites, video, and images. Finally, ebrary provides citations when you copy and paste into Word or text applications that include a hyperlink back to the ebrary source. Announcing Gil-Find : A New Alternative to Searching the Catalog

Lane Library would like to announce the new Gil-Find library catalog interface. Meant to compliment the Classic Gil, Gil-Find provides an alternative for searching for items within our library catalog. Both options will remain available to you. Please try searching in both to see the differences yourself.

Designed to be more intuitive for users trying discover resources, GILFind offers some really fun and unique tools to help you with your research. One of the major differences you will notice is that Gil-Find uses faceted searching. Faceted searching allows you to narrow your search according to location, format, topic, language, time period, etc. just by clicking! This is particularly useful when you're browsing or not exactly sure how to define your search parameters.

Here's an example of what the search results might look for a basic search on "dogs". You can see that a wide variety of results will appear. If you decide you're mostly interested in reading fiction about dogs, you may want to click on the "P-Language and Literature" link under the Call Number category. That will narrow your results to only fictional works about dogs.

What else can it do? Text yourself a citation. Directly export an item into a citation manager (EndNote, Refworks). See an image of the cover of the work. Add tags to an item record. Add your own user review. Set up an RSS feed of searches. Get suggestions of similar items. Read or preview the book in Google Books. And more! There are so many options that we're excited about!

Gil-Find was developed by Villanova University using open-source (free to use) software and implemented in a pilot project for University System of Georgia. The Lane Library at AASU is excited to be the first library to roll out the product after the completion of the pilot project.

We will be providing opportunities to learn more about Gil-Find and what makes it unique. We will offer live tutorials and more detailed online tutorials here on the blog. Your feedback is important. We're looking forward to hearing what you think of the new Gil-Find!

Booknotes Series

A new digital archive has now made the C-SPAN series Booknotes available. The series originally ran from 1988-2004 and featured hour-long interviews with non-fiction authors. The C-SPAN Video Library allows for either browsing or keyword searching of each of the 799 episodes in the series. The transcript of each episode is also available and can be keyword searched, and a demo on how to search the video library is also available.

Pulitzer Prizes 2010

The winners of the Pulitzer Prizes for 2010 have been announced. The list of winners and finalists is a great resource to find something new and interesting to read. For fiction, the winner was Tinkers by Paul Harding; the poetry winner was Versed by Rae Armantrout; in history the winner was Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World by Liaquat Ahamed; and in general non-fiction the Pulitzer Prize was for The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy by David E. We are pleased to announce some new services available at Lane Library. The first is Chat Reference, which gives all of our users yet one more way to contact a librarian. Chat Reference is an instant messaging service which allows you to ask questions and communicate in real-time. Access to Chat Reference is available on the newly redesigned library homepage. If the status in the Chat Reference box says "lane_library is online", simply type your question in the box - it's that simple!

Our second new service is the "AASU Recommended" feature for bestsellers. Similar to the recommended books section at bookstores, our AASU Recommended shelf displays new bestselling books that a member of the AASU community has read and enjoyed. It is helpful for picking out a book to read, but it is also your chance to recommend your favorites to us! Swing by the library's first floor to check it out.

Reading: Harvard's New Digital Collection

The Harvard University Library is making a significant portion of its historical collection available via a new digital collection called Reading: Harvard Views of Readers, Readership, and Reading History. This Harvard University Library Open Collections Program aims to explore the history of reading and make available online many of the original manuscripts, books and unique items from their special collections. This means that anyone with Internet access will be able to view items such as personally annotated books owned by John Keats and Herman Melville, the catalog from William Wordsworth's private library, and library records from Harvard showing the reading selections of Emerson, Longfellow, and Thoreau. This is a splendid opportunity to view materials that are an incredibly important part of our literary and cultural history.

In addition to historical collections from Harvard's archives, the Reading site also explores the topic of reading. Ideas such as how we choose what to read and common reading habits are presented with digitized samples of book lists and marginalia written by classic authors. The entire site is a treasure for those who value books and enjoy the pleasures of reading.

One of the premium tools Lane Library offers is Credo Reference, an electronic source for reference materials such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. The Lane Library homepage has a quick search feature for Credo Reference; you simply type in a subject and Credo Reference links you directly to resources that cover that subject.

You will also find Credo Reference e-books in the library catalog during your regular searching. The catalog records for Credo Reference link you directly to the specific electronic book. We have just added several new Credo Reference books of interest, including:
